When a Business Cannot Open, Every Hour Counts
Runcorn Locksmith works on business premises across Runcorn, from a shop that will not open at eight in the morning to a lock change booked for after closing. Emergency calls are taken 24 hours a day, every day, and there is no call-out charge. Call 01928 611001.
At home, a broken lock is a nuisance. On commercial premises it halts trade: staff stand on the pavement, deliveries go back on the van and customers meet a locked door. The repair may be identical to a domestic one, but the cost of waiting is not. That is why urgent business jobs are prioritised, and planned ones are fitted around your trading hours rather than through them. If you are shut out right now, see our emergency locksmith page or call.
What Businesses Call Us About
Nearly every commercial call we take fits one of five situations. Each one below links to the page that covers the work properly, so you know what to expect before you pick up the phone.
Locked out of the premises
No one can open up, the one person with a key is not answering, or a key has snapped in the lock first thing. Early morning is when this happens most, and it is treated as urgent. The door is usually opened without damage, so the lock keeps working. See locked out or.
A member of staff has left with keys
A problem no household has. Old keys go on working whoever has them, so when keys go missing after someone leaves, the only certain answer is new cylinders on every door they could open. The lock cases and handles normally stay, and it can usually be done outside opening hours.
The entrance door has failed
A shop or office entrance that will not lock, a handle that has worked loose, or a mechanism worn out by constant use. Quite often the door itself is fine and one part has failed, and the door is frequently aluminium or commercial-grade uPVC. See lock repair or.
The premises have been broken into
Shutters forced, an entrance door damaged, or a unit that cannot be locked until the police have finished. Report it to Cheshire Constabulary on 101 or online at cheshire.police.uk, or call 999 if anyone is in danger, and keep the crime reference for your insurer. We then make the premises secure, repair what we can and board up what has to wait for parts. See burglary repairs and.
Insurance or a lease requires a lock upgrade
Your commercial policy or your lease names a lock standard for the entrance. Once you know exactly what the document asks for, this is normally simple, so read the wording before you buy anything. See lock installation or.
Why a Commercial Lock Is Not a Domestic Lock
The biggest difference is workload. A front door at home might be opened a dozen times a day; a shop or office entrance can be opened several hundred. Hardware that would last years on a house wears out fast on a trading entrance, which is why commercial doors are specified with heavier-duty cylinders, handles and closers. The real cost of getting it wrong is rarely the part. It is the repeat visit, and the disruption, every time it fails again.
Commercial entrances also come in forms you seldom see on a house, and each needs the right hardware:
- Aluminium shopfront doors, which take different lock cases and cylinders from timber or uPVC
- Roller shutters and shutter locks guarding the frontage out of hours
- Higher cycle-life cylinders and heavier mechanisms chosen for the traffic, not the price
- Hardware to suit commercial door profiles rather than domestic ones
Specify the door wrongly and you pay for it over and over; specify it properly and it simply keeps working. When you call, tell us what the door is made of and what is on it now. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM item 17: whether commercial-grade hardware is stocked or sourced to order.] See lock replacement for the work itself.
Key Control When Staff Change
A business with a dozen staff and several keyholders loses track of keys far more easily than a family does. Keys get lent out, copied and not always given back. When someone leaves on poor terms, or just never returns their key, the honest truth is that you no longer know who can let themselves in. Each departure, each contractor and each lost key makes the picture less certain.
Changing the cylinder on every affected door fixes that, because it retires every existing key in one go, and it costs less than most businesses expect since the lock case and handles usually stay put. Where several doors need to work together, the new cylinders can be keyed alike so one key opens the set. One thing that costs nothing: keep a simple record of who holds which key, and the question rarely comes up again. See lock replacement or call 01928 611001.
Premises We Work On
The same technicians handle commercial and domestic work, so a flat above a shop, or any mixed-use building, is one call rather than two. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: the premises types listed below.]
- Shops and retail units, shopfronts and shutters included
- Offices and professional premises
- Pubs, bars, cafés and restaurants
- Industrial units, workshops and storage
- Schools, surgeries, salons and community buildings
- Commercial units let by landlords and managing agents, including between tenancies
For homes, see our residential locksmith page; landlords with residential lets can use our landlord and HMO services.
Work Scheduled Around Your Trading Hours
Most owners would rather see a locksmith at six in the evening than at eleven in the morning with the shop full. Because emergency cover already runs around the clock, planned commercial work does not have to happen while you are trading. A cylinder change, a new stockroom lock or a replacement shutter lock can be booked for before you open or after you close, so the shop floor stays undisturbed and customers never see a locksmith at the door. This works for planned jobs just as much as urgent ones, so mention your opening pattern when you ring. Out-of-hours work is charged at the higher rate, and you hear the price before it is booked.
Fire Doors and Escape Routes
Business premises carry duties around escape routes that a home does not. A door on an escape route must let people out without a key, which usually means keyless exit hardware on the inside, such as a thumbturn, push pad or panic bar, with the outside still locked. BS 8621 is the British Standard for lock assemblies with keyless egress, and panic hardware has its own standards. What your particular building needs depends on its fire risk assessment and how it is used, and that is decided by the person responsible for the premises, not by a locksmith. Check the assessment before changing anything on an exit door. We do not carry out fire risk assessments or give compliance advice. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether panic hardware, push bars or touch bars are supplied and fitted.] For lock standards more generally, see lock installation and BS 3621 and insurance-approved locks explained.
Invoicing and Paperwork
Every job ends with an itemised VAT invoice setting out the work done, the premises and any hardware fitted, which is what your accounts team needs and what an insurer may want to see if you claim. Where a business runs more than one property, work can be invoiced per job or per site to suit the way your books are kept. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: VAT registration status, itemised invoicing, and whether several sites can be invoiced on one account.] Ask about this when you book.
Locksmith pricing
What Does a Commercial Locksmith Cost?
There is no single commercial rate to publish, because business jobs vary far more than domestic ones. The price depends on:
- The door type, and whether it is aluminium, commercial-grade uPVC or timber
- The hardware specification the traffic through that door calls for
- How many doors and entrances are involved
- Whether the work is planned or urgent, and the time of day it is done
Give us your business postcode and a short description of the problem, and you will be given the expected price on the call, before anyone attends. If something on site changes it, you are told before any work begins. There is no call-out charge. You pay for the work carried out, any parts needed, and VAT. Rates outside Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, are higher, but the call-out itself is never charged. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether commercial rates differ from domestic, and whether a commercial starting price can be published.]
For how pricing works in general, see our full guide to locksmith prices in Runcorn. For a price on your job, call 01928 611001.
What affects the cost?
Service required, time of attendance, lock and door type, labour and parts.
